(Photosynthetic/assimilatory roots):-
(Hygroscopic roots/Epiphytic roots/Hanging roots) :-
(Haustarial / Parasitic roots) :-
(Money plant)
English Translation
Adventitious roots that perform specific biological functions: -
(i) Photosynthetic/assimilatory roots:-
• These are green colored roots which take part in photosynthesis. Like Tinospora, Teniophyll, Podostemum, Trapa / Water chestnut etc.
(ii) Hygroscopic roots / Epiphytic roots / Hanging roots :-
• These roots are found in epiphytes.
• These roots hang in the air and have velamen or spongy tissue to absorb moisture directly from the atmosphere.
• In these epiphytic roots, root hairs and root nodules are absent. Like- Vanda, Dendrobium, Orchid etc.
(iii) Haustarial / Parasitic roots :-
• These roots are found in parasitic plants and enter the host to get water and food.
Like- Cuscutta (Cuscutta / Dodder / Amar Bel / Akshay Bel), Orobenki, Viscum (Viscum-Mistletoe) etc.
(iv) Floating roots:- These roots store air so they are swollen and spongy. Floating roots help in keeping the aquatic plants on the surface of the water. Like Jussia (Jussiaea).
* buoyancy helps in swimming
(v) Reproductive roots:- Adventitious buds are formed on these roots and these roots help in vegetative reproduction.
Like - dahlia, sweet potato. Rosewood, Populus.
(vi) Epiphyllous roots / Follar roots :- These roots emerge from the leaf especially from its damaged parts.
Like- Bryophyllum, Begonia.
(vii) Leaf roots :- In Salvinia, a leaf of each node is modified into root-like structures to maintain water balance.
(viii) Clinging/Ascending Roots :- These are non-absorbing roots which develop from internodes, internodes or both. These adventitious roots help in the ascent of plants by burrowing into the cracks of the firm base.
As :-
From festivals - (i) Tecoma (ii) Pan
From Parva - (i) Ficus pumila
From both Gala and Gala - Ivy's teenage years.
(ix) Root thorn:- In some plants some roots are modified into hard pointed structures, these are called 'root thorns'. Like- Pothos Armatus (Money plant)
(x) Contractile roots:- These roots contract from their original size to move deeper into an underground structure in plants. Like-Saffron (Crocus), Freesia (Freesia)
(xi) Oxidative roots :- These are found in rice and release oxygen in waterlogged condition.
